D.Z. Phillips: In Memoriam

Approximately a week ago (the 4th) I attended D.Z’s memorial.  This was a second memorial.  The original memorial/funeral was held in Wales in August.  I regret not attending, though I had neither the time nor the money to get there.  But some experiences are worth the trouble they entail.  Because once they’re gone, they’re gone (no second chance).  I’ll always have limited time and funds.

The memorial was held on the campus of the Claremont School of Theology.  It was a serene afternoon, breezy and very pleasant.  The service began at 4:00 PM.  The chapel was full and contained many of my former professors / fellow grad students (many of whom are now professors themselves).

There were prayers, readings, and remembrances from former and current colleagues and students.  The most moving part of the service, as far as I’m concerned, happened when Keith Lane performed a series of songs on the Irish Whistle.  Mr. Lane performed a medley of Welsh (all through the night), Irish (be Thou my vision), and American (amazing grace) songs.  It was quite moving, and a fitting tribute to DZ Phillips.

The service was nice, but solemn.  There were a few happy remembrances, and a few chuckles.  But the mood was somber.  A sense of hope, and talk of heaven and eternal life were absent.  But that might have been a reflection of the theology of those running the show.  I don’t know.

In any case, it was good to say goodbye properly.

I’ve culled two more obituaries.  One from the TimesOnline and another from The Prosblogion.  The Times Online article is a bit longer and contains some info on Phillips’ philosophy.
