The Power of the Face
I know, probably, you didn’t arise this morning thinking about faces – maybe individual faces (your husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, etc), but not faces generally.
But you should think about faces. Faces are everything in life. Faces make us human. A covered face is a non-human thing. And it is important that we be human. Warriors mask their faces thereby making themselves more than human. Across Arabia today many women are masked, thus, making them less than human.
When we want to humanize (personalize) something we give it a face - a human face (think: Pixar, Disney). Religiously, when God wanted to show us something important about himself he showed us his face literally (the incarnation).
Further, how you wear your face tells me about you. Do you wear make-up? How do you wear it? Are you smiling? Frowning? What’s that “look” in your eye – intelligence, flirtation, kindness, malice?
Without your face, I don’t (and can’t) know you. Without your face you are unknowable.
Even more (addendum): Your face is sex ( or gender) specific. Your face tells me whether you are a man, or a woman. Being a man (or a woman) is essential to who you are. You are not a sexless (i.e. genderless) soul. Your soul is either male or female, masculine or feminine.
